Are you at risk of HIV?
HIV does not discriminate it affects all walks of life, all races, men, women, and children.
The HIV virus only lives in bodily fluids - blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal secretions and breast milk.
HIV can be passed on through:
- Unprotected sex (without a condom) with someone who has the HIV virus
- By sharing needles or drug injecting equipment with someone who has the HIV virus.
- From an HIV positive mother to her baby during delivery or through breastfeeding.
- From infected blood transfusion (Pre 198?? In the UK as blood and blood products are screened for HIV from this time)
HIV cannot pass through unbroken skin or through the air. It is not contagious.
You can not become infected with HIV by being close to someone who is HIV positive or by hugging, kissing, shaking hands or using the same cutlery or toilet as someone who has the HIV virus.
